Mission Statement:
The objects and purposes for which said corporation is formed shall be educational, charitable, athletic, civic and recreational, including the following:
  • To forward the best interest of the horse industry of New Mexico in all its phases and specifically of sponsoring, cultivating and fostering an interest in fine horses and fine horsemanship;
  • To give aid and support to every type of activity concerning horses;
  • To assist and encourage any type of equine activity which will further the general purpose;
  • To assist and encourage acquisition, building, maintenance and supervision of trails and rights of way;
  • To do any and all things in furtherance of the interest of horses and horsemen.

To help accomplish our mission, the Horse Council provides booth space and a stall in front of the Horse Arena at the NM State Fair for use by member organizations to display a horse and information about their breed or discipline.

Julie Wilson was at the booth this year, representing NMQHA, and wrote the following:

"And what a day it was- I have a new appreciation for this activity and on behalf of NMQHA say thanks to the Horse Council for the opportunity to do face-time with lots of kids who want to touch a horse. "He's so soft" was the phrase of the day. Turns out it was mostly an opportunity for TC Hi Zeus to spend face-time with his adoring public. His left side is probably smeared with everything from mustard to cotton candy but he seemed to enjoy every little hand- and there were many. I would say, as his straight-person, that the horse industry missed some opportunities to exploit the power of people touching horses because I needed lots more info on where folks can go to ride and take instruction- mostly in ABQ area but I had inquiries for SF and Las Cruces- who knew. I was surprised at the number of people who came to touch Hi but stayed to talk horse. Most distressing was that by 2 ish there were no horses in the Horse Arena (show was over) AND there were no horses in any of the stalls- Hi was the only rep of his kind in view. Sitting and watching the horses (if only briefly) is one of the few FREE pleasures at the Fair- one gentleman was quite irate- he comes to the Fair many days of every year to sit and watch the horses. He noticed there were fewer horses everyday and then Sunday there were none- at least in prime time. I watched innumerable strollers rumble into the arena only to rumble out again moments later to the whine "-I want to see the horses, where are the horses?" Hi seemed to smile and say- "Why would you want to see others- I'm here." While recollecting the ole glory days with some barrel racing buddies we talked about the years when the speed events included the rodeo competitors mounted on Quarter Horses ( usually at least 50 in the open and a good number of youth) where the stands filled with spectators whoopin' it up for each run. Is it really over? Hi basked in his fame but returned to his quiet retirement with Dick and Suellen. I drove north yearning for those glorious days of yesteryear and feeling sorry for all the folks who didn't get to see the horses. Until entries can be increased seems like we need to schedule the classes for the middle of the day so all those folks -young and old- can see the horses at the Fair."
